About Professor Majid Ali

I am currently a Consultant General, Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon, and the head of the department of surgical specialities & endoscopy at the University Hospital Ayrshire & Arran, a unit I set up in 2007.

I was trained in bariatric (weight loss) surgery in the West Midlands at the internationally renowned Heartlands NHS Hospital. Heartlands has a reputation for excellence in bariatrics and has published extensively. It is unique among NHS hospitals as it has maintained a gastric band programme, alongside its sleeve and bypass services.

The bariatric centre which I have created in Ayrshire is one of the four main bariatric centres in Scotland. Due to its reputation for excellence, it receives referrals from all over Scotland including some of the country’s most complex cases.

Since my appointment as a consultant, I have become a very experienced General and Upper GI laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeon and have developed a special interest in surgery to treat severe and/or complex obesity.

I have received several awards in the recognition of his achievements in the fields of surgery and teaching, and am an Honorary Professor at the school of health and Science at the University of West of Scotland. I am also a manager and representative of the Scottish Bariatric Surgeons in the SCOTS study, a study that is reviewing the long-term effects of weight loss surgery. I regularly participates in international conferences, both as an invited speaker and to demonstrate surgical technique through a live feed.
