About Mr John Loy

I am a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at The Homerton University Hospital in Central London where I am also service lead for bariatrics.

I completed medical school in Belfast in 2002 and went on to complete my higher surgical training in Severn Deanery, specialising in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. I completed my training at the Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship level in both weight loss surgery and advanced keyhole surgery.

I am the surgical teaching coordinator for Queen Mary University ‘Barts’ and for the London medical students at the Homerton University Hospital. I have a special interest in fatty liver disease and collaborate on this with the renowned Blizzard Institute.

I was also fortunate enough to spend a year working in the world-renowned NYU Langone Medical Centre in New York with Professors George Fielding and Professor Christine Fielding. Some of the best practices I learned in New York I have carried through to my private and NHS practice here in the UK.

I’m delighted to be part of this group because I think it is essential that people are fully informed of their surgical options, including the implications of surgery for them personally before they decide on the type of procedure they’ll have, where and with whom. This has come into focus for me recently as I have treated a series of patients who travelled overseas for invasive surgical procedures only to put their lives at risk travelling back. I have seen this patient in my NHS clinic and they all regret their decision to have surgery overseas. These are precisely the implications of surgery that patients need to be fully informed about before they decide to go ahead.

My private practice is based at the London Independent Hospital in London. This is one of the few private hospitals in the country with on-site high dependency facilities. This means patients can go ahead in confidence that the services that are needed to keep them safe are available on site.
